We’re happy to share a preview of the The Ghenie Chapels, an independent project curated by Alessandra Borghese (@aleborghese) and conceived with Adrian Ghenie (@adrian.ghenie), which opens to the public from 9 June on the Via Maqueda in central Palermo, Sicily.
Two new site-specific paintings by Adrian Ghenie have been permanently installed to exist in dialogue with their historic setting at Chiesa della Madonna della Mazza. The paintings draw on the themes of peace and justice, a recurrent in classical religious iconography, while relating directly to contemporary events, offering an interpretation of current social and political issues.
#AdrianGhenie: You don’t have to go back to a martyrdom of a saint who died 1,000 years ago when you have under your very nose, today, exactly the same kind of histories that generate classic iconography.
Learn more about the paintings and watch a short documentary filmed at the artist’s studio and in Palermo via the link in bio.
Fondazione Ghenie Chapels has been established to promote cultural exchange, develop national and international projects that foster open cultural discussions and promote the ideals of art and social inclusion. The inaugural event will be a musical homage, a performance by Giovanni Andrea Zanon on 28 June. More info: https://fondazionegheniechapels.org
